What are my options for dental implants?

dental implantsDental implants are the most effective, successful, and beneficial tooth replacement option. They help patients avoid the negative side effects associated with missing teeth and restore the mouth to its natural health, beauty, and function.

A missing tooth is more than just an aesthetic issue, it’s a health issue as well. When a gap remains, the neighboring teeth begin to move into the empty space which leads to crowding and crooked teeth. This also makes it more difficult to clean your teeth which raises your risk of decay, gum disease, and further tooth loss. A missing tooth also promotes jawbone deterioration that causes facial sagging—this is especially noticeable when a person is missing more than one tooth.

Dental Implant Options

If you’re missing one or more teeth, these three types of dental implants are available to you:

Single Tooth Dental Implant

For patients that are missing one or two teeth, single tooth dental implants are the most logical and beneficial option. An implant replaces each missing tooth and a dental crown is secured to the top of the implant. This restores your entire smile to its full function and stimulates the jawbone so you can avoid atrophy.

All-On-4 Implants

Also called same-day dentures, All-On-4 dental implants provide full-arch restoration. As opposed to placing a single implant for each missing tooth, dentists are able to place four implants at special angles to maximize stability. A full denture is placed on the same day to provide immediate results.

The benefits of this unique approach include:

  • Superior stability
  • Less jawbone density required
  • Faster recovery time
  • Long-lasting results

Implant-Retained Devices

Without dental implants, dental bridges and dentures lack stability, longevity, strength, and natural-looking appearance. Replacing the tooth root is essential to gaining these benefits. Implant-retained devices support jawbone health and help your dentures and bridge last longer.

An implant-retained dental bridge is best for patients with one to three missing teeth in a row. To secure the bridge, the dentist inserts two dental implants where the outermost pontics are eventually placed. These support the additional crowns.

Implant-retained dentures are similar to the All-On-4 implant procedure, but instead of four implants, six implants are typically required. Compared to traditional dentures, this option looks, feels, and acts just like natural teeth.

Dental Implant Placement

To place the implant, our board-certified periodontist, Dr. Pichak Kelk, will make a small incision in your gums and insert the screw-like implant. With over 20 years of experience, you can trust Dr. Kelk to be gentle and precise! Finally, the dentist will stitch up the surgical site.

In the months following your surgery, a process called osseointegration takes place. This is when new bone cells surround the implant and fuse it to your jawbone. The implant becomes a permanent part of your jawbone!

When the surgical site is healed, an abutment is placed on top of the implant and connects the implant to your crown. Your dentist will take impressions of your mouth and design your custom-made crown which will be ready in about two weeks.

Finally, your dentist will place the crown, and you can enjoy your fully functioning, beautiful smile!

All-On-4 Implants for a Permanent Solution

All-On-4 Implants

Does the fear of loose-fitting dentures slipping or falling out keep you from enjoying life? Hate dealing with messy adhesives? Have you ever had to hunt them down because you forgot where you put them? Or maybe you had to replace them due to breakage? All-On-4 implants let you avoid all that.

With All-On-4, you get a permanent solution that mimics real teeth. When done right, they look and feel natural.

But deciding on All-On-4 restorations is a big investment, and you want to be sure you can rely on the process and results. Many dentists offer implant-supported restorations, but not all of them have what it takes to give you the results you desire.

At Ocean View Dental, our friendly dental team has the knowledge, experience, and training you can trust when it comes to your permanent solution.

The Hassles of Traditional Removable Dentures

If you wear removable dentures or know someone who does, you likely know many of the associated hassles.

Common complaints include:

  • They don’t look or feel real
  • They require frequent, thorough cleaning
  • Expensive, messy adhesives (which also make cleaning more difficult)
  • They must be removed at night
  • Certain foods are off-limits
  • They can break if you drop them
  • They can become ill-fitting, which can cause clacking noises, slippage, and pain.

But there are also many considerations denture-wearers are often unaware of.

For instance, since traditional dentures do nothing to replace your tooth roots, bone loss occurs in your jaw. This bone loss changes the shape of your face and jaw. These changes are what cause dentures to become loose, and often patients must replace their dentures every five or six years to achieve a good fit. This is also what gives denture wearers an aged look due to the sunken-in appearance of the face.

Another consideration is that food particles can get easily trapped between your dentures and gums, which puts you at a much higher risk of gum disease.

Moreover, many patients change their diet, usually due to ill-fitting dentures, and this can lead to poor nutrition.

What are All-On-4 implants?

With All-On-4, permanent restorations are anchored in place with dental implants. But rather than requiring the traditional six to eight dental implants per arch, today’s technology allows for a process called All-On-4. This advanced treatment involves placing the implants at special angles, meaning you can enjoy fixed restorations with only four dental implants per arch.

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically implanted into your jawbone. While the surgery is considered minor and carries few risks, proper placement and success rates are important considerations.

To ensure the best result with dental implants, you want to choose a doctor highly experienced and trained in implantology. Many dentists boast of their training and experience with placing dental implants, but often their training only involved a weekend class. The truth is, only two types of doctors specialize in implantology—periodontists and oral surgeons.

At Ocean View Dental, we are proud to have Board-Certified Periodontist Dr. Pichak Kelk on our team. When Dr. Kelk places your implants, you can trust her experience, which included an additional three years of training in periodontology and implantology after completing dental school.

Once your implants are firmly placed within your jawbone, your All-On-4 full-arch restoration is secured permanently onto the implants for a strong, stable, beautiful smile.

What are the benefits of All-On-4 implants?

When considering your oral health, a major benefit is that dental implants mimic the job of your tooth roots. Therefore, each time you chew or bite, the implants stimulate your bone tissue and keep it healthy. Because of this, you do not have to worry about the bone loss that occurs with traditional removable dentures.

Also, the restoration does not simply rest on your gums. Instead, it is anchored directly into the jawbone, offering tremendous stability and strength.

Other benefits include:

  • They feel, act, and look like natural teeth
  • No more gum pain
  • Care is easy—brush and floss like natural teeth
  • No more expensive, messy adhesives
  • No food restrictions
  • They won’t slip, become loose, or fall out
  • No issues with talking or eating
  • You won’t break or lose them
  • They last for decades
