is invisalign right for me

Do you dream of a beautiful smile? Do rotated, crowded, or crooked teeth get in the way of that dream? If so, you may be wondering if Invisalign® orthodontics is the answer you’ve been looking for.

But did you know that Invisalign clear aligners do more than improve the beauty of your smile? They also improve your overall oral health. Misaligned teeth are much harder to keep clean and therefore put you at an increased risk of dental decay and gum disease.

However, treatment with Invisalign aligners is not for everyone. Our caring doctors at Ocean View Dental Care can evaluate your unique needs and determine if you are a good candidate.

Some patients may require treatment options other than Invisalign. Ocean View Dental Care is fortunate to have partnered with Dr. Katherine Ahn of Aviara Centers. She provides the latest in traditional orthodontics, as well as advanced techniques in the area of facial growth and development.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign involves aligner technology using clear trays, known as aligners, that discreetly and gently move your teeth into their desired position.

These aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day for maximum effectiveness. Since they are custom-made, they perfectly fit your teeth. Add to this the fact that they are clear, and you get an orthodontic solution that is nearly invisible.

Many patients choose Invisalign due to their invisibility, but the fact that they are removable offers several other advantages as well. For instance, oral hygiene is much easier and more effective, as no wires or brackets get in the way. Also, since you remove them to eat, you do not have any limitations on your food choices.

Moreover, the aligners are comfortable, and you don’t have many of the inconveniences associated with conventional braces. For example, the occasional loose bracket or broken wire which can cut into the gum or inner lip.

How do I get started with Invisalign?

The first step involves a consultation appointment. Since aligners are not for everyone, our trained Invisalign doctors at Ocean View Dental Care will evaluate your teeth and gums, as well as your bite, to see if you are a candidate. They will also evaluate your overall health. Some issues, such as dental decay or gum disease, may need to be treated before we can begin with aligner treatment.

If your issues are too complex for Invisalign, we will simply have Dr. Ahn evaluate you to determine your needs.

If we feel Invisalign will effectively move your teeth into their desired position, we will take photographs and digital x-rays.

Next, we will take digital impressions utilizing our TRIOS system. This advanced dental technology offers convenience and comfort. Instead of putting gooey, gummy impression material in your mouth, we use our “magic wand.” This wand allows for immediate images that are much more precise than traditional impressions.

Our doctors will then use all the information they gathered to create a customized treatment plan to realign your teeth in the most efficient, effective way.

We will then send your impressions, x-rays, photos, and our treatment plan to the dental laboratory for fabrication of your custom aligners.

What can I expect during treatment?

Before you begin treatment, we will give you all the information you need so your treatment will be successful. We will also let you know how long you will wear each set before progressing on to the next set in your series of custom aligners. For most patients, this is every two weeks.

Once you receive your aligners, you will need to wear them 22 hours a day so you can stay on track with your treatment plan. While you will not need to visit us every time you progress to a new set, you will come in for occasional visits so we can ensure your treatment stays on track.

Invisalign treatment will straighten your teeth through gentle pressure. This pressure is what allows for tooth movement.

Treatment times vary depending on each patient’s unique needs, but most patients wear aligners for 6 to 18 months.

Once your teeth reach their desired position, you will transition to retainers to keep your teeth from shifting back to their original position.

Keep Your Porcelain Veneers Looking Beautiful

keep porcelain veneers looking beautifulPorcelain veneers quickly and dramatically improve your smile, but how long do they last? Few things in dentistry last forever, but you can extend their life with proper care and consideration.

Depending on your desires and goals, porcelain veneers can fix one or two problem teeth or give you an entire smile makeover. They can cover numerous flaws in your smile. For instance, gaps between teeth, severe discoloration, and teeth that are cracked, broken, uneven, worn down, and misaligned. And because they are made of porcelain, they are stain-resistant and durable.

However, it is possible to damage or break veneers. How you care for them will play an important role in their longevity.

But it isn’t all up to you. Other important factors in the longevity of your veneers include the experience of your dentist and the quality of the veneers.

Quality and Care Matter with Porcelain Veneers

At Ocean View Dental Care, our doctors have many years of experience in perfectly marrying dental art and science when restoring and enhancing smiles. We utilize state-of-the-art equipment and technology, but we also have an eye for beauty. We customize your veneers to the perfect size, shape, and color for you, offering stunning yet natural-looking results.

Two of the most important considerations when it comes to the strength and durability of your veneers include tooth preparation and the bonding process. The doctors at Ocean View Dental Care understand this and are always careful and diligent to perform these with a gentle hand and complete attention to detail.

In addition, we use a top-notch laboratory that handcrafts individual veneers to custom fit each tooth. In their process, they blend colors into each veneer in layers which gives a longer-lasting natural look. This is a much better option than veneers milled in the dentist’s office, which are superficially stained to achieve the desired color. This superficial stain wears off over time, affecting their brightness and color.

Once your veneers are placed, however, it is up to you. How well you take care of your beautiful smile directly affects how long your beautiful smile lasts.

How to Care for Your Porcelain Veneers

Before you invest in your smile, make sure you understand how to properly care for your smile to keep it gorgeous for as long as possible.

Porcelain is strong and durable, and it is less porous than tooth enamel, so veneers are much more resistant to stains than teeth are. However, veneers are not impervious to discoloration and damage. Therefore, it is important to protect them.

For instance, if you bite down on hard items, like fingernails or ice, you can break them. Also, even though veneers resist stains, dark-colored drinks and foods do have the potential of staining the bonding material. This is especially true if your tooth is not prepared properly. Also, any natural teeth that do not have a veneer can stain, leaving you with teeth that don’t match.

Proper care for your veneers includes:

  • Avoiding foods and drinks that can stain

If you must drink things such as coffee, soda, and red wine, consider using a straw.

  • Not chewing on things

If you tend to chew on ice, pen caps, or your fingernails, you may want to break this habit before considering veneers.

  • Carefully considering the things you eat

Some foods may contain hidden materials that can weaken the bonding material or damage your veneers—for instance, wings, ribs, beans, and corn on the cobb.

  • Not grinding or clenching your teeth (a condition called bruxism)

Bruxism causes excess pressure that can damage veneers. If you grind or clench your teeth, you will want to discuss this with your dentist. You may want to wear a custom nightguard while you sleep to protect your teeth.

  • Flossing and brushing diligently

It is very important to remove all food particles that can stain teeth and bonding agents. This also helps prevent cavities and gum disease, which can negatively affect the aesthetics of your smile.

  • Avoiding mouthwash that contains alcohol

The alcohol can deteriorate the bonding material.

  • Keeping up with your dental visits

Professional cleanings remove tartar, which can cause dental decay and gum disease.

If your veneers are superficially stained (such as those milled in by a machine) is also important to avoid abrasive toothpastes, which can remove the white staining.
