is invisalign right for me

Do you dream of a beautiful smile? Do rotated, crowded, or crooked teeth get in the way of that dream? If so, you may be wondering if Invisalign® orthodontics is the answer you’ve been looking for.

But did you know that Invisalign clear aligners do more than improve the beauty of your smile? They also improve your overall oral health. Misaligned teeth are much harder to keep clean and therefore put you at an increased risk of dental decay and gum disease.

However, treatment with Invisalign aligners is not for everyone. Our caring doctors at Ocean View Dental Care can evaluate your unique needs and determine if you are a good candidate.

Some patients may require treatment options other than Invisalign. Ocean View Dental Care is fortunate to have partnered with Dr. Katherine Ahn of Aviara Centers. She provides the latest in traditional orthodontics, as well as advanced techniques in the area of facial growth and development.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign involves aligner technology using clear trays, known as aligners, that discreetly and gently move your teeth into their desired position.

These aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day for maximum effectiveness. Since they are custom-made, they perfectly fit your teeth. Add to this the fact that they are clear, and you get an orthodontic solution that is nearly invisible.

Many patients choose Invisalign due to their invisibility, but the fact that they are removable offers several other advantages as well. For instance, oral hygiene is much easier and more effective, as no wires or brackets get in the way. Also, since you remove them to eat, you do not have any limitations on your food choices.

Moreover, the aligners are comfortable, and you don’t have many of the inconveniences associated with conventional braces. For example, the occasional loose bracket or broken wire which can cut into the gum or inner lip.

How do I get started with Invisalign?

The first step involves a consultation appointment. Since aligners are not for everyone, our trained Invisalign doctors at Ocean View Dental Care will evaluate your teeth and gums, as well as your bite, to see if you are a candidate. They will also evaluate your overall health. Some issues, such as dental decay or gum disease, may need to be treated before we can begin with aligner treatment.

If your issues are too complex for Invisalign, we will simply have Dr. Ahn evaluate you to determine your needs.

If we feel Invisalign will effectively move your teeth into their desired position, we will take photographs and digital x-rays.

Next, we will take digital impressions utilizing our TRIOS system. This advanced dental technology offers convenience and comfort. Instead of putting gooey, gummy impression material in your mouth, we use our “magic wand.” This wand allows for immediate images that are much more precise than traditional impressions.

Our doctors will then use all the information they gathered to create a customized treatment plan to realign your teeth in the most efficient, effective way.

We will then send your impressions, x-rays, photos, and our treatment plan to the dental laboratory for fabrication of your custom aligners.

What can I expect during treatment?

Before you begin treatment, we will give you all the information you need so your treatment will be successful. We will also let you know how long you will wear each set before progressing on to the next set in your series of custom aligners. For most patients, this is every two weeks.

Once you receive your aligners, you will need to wear them 22 hours a day so you can stay on track with your treatment plan. While you will not need to visit us every time you progress to a new set, you will come in for occasional visits so we can ensure your treatment stays on track.

Invisalign treatment will straighten your teeth through gentle pressure. This pressure is what allows for tooth movement.

Treatment times vary depending on each patient’s unique needs, but most patients wear aligners for 6 to 18 months.

Once your teeth reach their desired position, you will transition to retainers to keep your teeth from shifting back to their original position.

Besides being clear, why is Invisalign® so popular?

the popularity of invialign

Invisalign® clear aligner technology has been around since the 1990s, and they have continuously grown in popularity since coming on the scene. Adults and teenagers alike love them as an alternative to traditional metal braces, but what is it about them that makes them so popular?

At Ocean View Dental Care, our dental team offers Invisalign clear aligners because we understand the benefits that make them so popular.

But aside from being clear, what does Invisalign offer?

Here, we discuss 6 reasons why Invisalign clear aligners are so popular.

  1. Versatility
  2. Discreet
  3. Comfort
  4. Unlimited food options
  5. Easier oral hygiene
  6. Fewer visits with your provider

Reason #1 Invisalign is Popular: Versatility

Whether you have an open bite, overbite, underbite, or crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth, Invisalign can help.

The doctors at Ocean View Dental create an individualized treatment plan for your orthodontic needs. The clear aligners are custom-made to move your teeth gently and smoothly into the desired positions. Everything to do with Invisalign is based on your unique needs, desires, and goals.

Reason #2 Invisalign is Popular: Discreet

Okay, so we said besides being clear, but we can’t ignore pointing it out. The truth is, Invisalign aligners are custom-made of a clear, flexible plastic. They also fit your teeth perfectly. Combined, this means our clear aligners are practically invisible, even to people standing right next to you.

In other words, Invisalign clear aligners move your teeth discreetly, so no one needs to know you are receiving orthodontic treatment.

Reason #3 Invisalign is Popular: Comfort

Metal brackets and wires can poke, break, and cause injuries to the cheek, tongue, and gums. Clear aligners, however, are made of comfortable, flexible plastic materials and have no sharp edges. This means no discomfort, injuries, or need for orthodontic wax.

And because the clear aligners move your teeth slowly, gently, and constantly, you don’t have the intense “tightening day” pains traditional braces subject you to.

In addition, if you play sports, you can remove them to wear a sport’s mouthguard. This can greatly reduce your risk of soft tissue injuries.

Reason #4 Invisalign is Popular: Unlimited Food Options

Since clear aligners are removable, you can eat whatever you like. Many patients find this the most desirable reason to go with aligners over nonremovable metal brackets and wires.

Have you seen the “avoid these foods” lists with traditional braces?

With metal braces, you must avoid chewy, crunchy, hard, and sticky foods. You also need to avoid many foods you bite into, such as corn on the cob, apples, and carrots.

With clear aligners, you remove them to eat. This means no food restrictions.

Reason #5 Invisalign is Popular: Easier Oral Hygiene

Have you ever seen someone with traditional braces flossing their teeth? If you haven’t, just try to imagine. It can be challenging. As can brushing, since food particles can easily become stuck in the wires and brackets.

With clear aligners, you remove them for oral hygiene. This means far fewer issues with dental decay and gum disease when compared to patients with metal braces.

Reason #6 Invisalign is Popular: Fewer Visits with Your Provider

Traditional braces require a visit with your orthodontist every three or four weeks for “tightening.” With Invisalign, you simply progress to the next series of aligners based on your schedule. While your progress depends on several variables, including patient compliance and complexity, you do not need to visit your provider to progress. Most patients move to a new series of aligners every two weeks.

Instead of provider visits every three to four weeks, Invisalign patients only see their provider every six to eight weeks.

Also, since you can remove your aligners for things like eating and sports, you can avoid the emergency visits required for broken brackets and wires—as well as the resulting soft tissue injuries that occur from broken wires and brackets.
