Are dental implants safe?

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Patients sometimes come to us with questions as to how safe the placement of dental implants is.  Understanding the potential risks or side effects of implant surgery allows our patients to make an informed decision about whether or not to proceed with treatment.

After 50 years of successful implant placement in the U.S., this procedure is considered very safe, especially when performed by an experienced doctor.  Ocean View Dental Care is fortunate to offer the services of Board-certified periodontist, Dr. Pichak Kelk. Dr. Kelk received very specialized training, having completed a 15-month fellowship in dental implant surgery. More importantly, she has over 20 years of experience in placing dental implants.

Dental Implant Success Rate

The National Institute of Health notes that, “Implant studies frequently report outcome rates exceeding 95 percent. Recent advancements in the field of dentistry have revolutionized the use of dental implants.”

Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime. In fact, over 95% of all implants placed are still intact and healthy 10 years after placement. Once the titanium posts are surgically placed, the surrounding jawbone tissue integrates (fuses) in and around the threads of the implant fixture. This process is referred to as osseointegration and essentially makes the implant a functioning part of your jaw.

How will my doctor ensure that my implants are safely placed?

The most important step any patient can take is to work with a qualified and experienced doctor. Dr. Kelk has a long track record of safely placing implants, over 20 years!  Before your surgery is scheduled, Dr. Kelk will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. A thorough evaluation of your overall health and facial structures will be conducted.

By screening for known risk factors, Dr. Kelk can ensure that you enjoy successful implant placement. Two leading risk factors for implant failure are tobacco use and jawbone atrophy. If you are found to be a less-than-ideal candidate, Dr. Kelk may be able to work with you to improve your candidacy through a variety of means.

Patients have an active role to play in ensuring that their implants remain healthy. After your implants are placed, you will enter into the integration phase which lasts three to six months. Maintaining good oral hygiene habits and following your recovery guidelines are critical to ensuring that your implants successfully fuse with your jawbone.

Patients should abstain from using any tobacco products or engaging in activities that could result in an impact to the face. Once your implants have fully integrated, maintaining good oral hygiene habits and visiting our office regularly for cleanings and check-ups can ensure that you enjoy your implants for a lifetime.

Dental implants deliver life-changing benefits. To be able to smile with confidence and eat regular foods without any trouble is absolutely priceless. If you have one or more missing teeth or are dissatisfied with the performance of your traditional denture or partial denture, Dr. Kelk can place one or more dental implants to restore form and function to your smile.

Dr. Kelk served as the Dental Board of California onsite examiner for conscious sedation for many years. She is currently part-time clinical faculty at the Advanced Periodontology Program at USC Dental School, where she trains future periodontists in surgical skills.

’Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions. According to one poll, half of Americans are focusing on shoring up their finances by cutting back on spending when possible. Benefits of Dental Membership Plans

Our low-cost membership plans are easy to use and understand. Individual plans are $285 per adult per year. Individual + Spouse plans are $495 per year. Families can add additional children (14 and under) for $125 per child. Older children (15 to 26) can enjoy this plan for $165 per year.

Once you’ve made your annual payment, you can enjoy preventative care throughout the year for no additional cost. Those savings can add up when you consider the out-of-pocket expenses non-members pay. These treatments are included in our membership plan.

  • Exam ($128 regular fee)
  • X-rays ($294 regular fee)
  • Adult cleaning ($108 regular fee)
  • Child cleaning ($88 regular fee)

Exams and x-rays for a family of four would run $1,688, based on our fee schedule. You can see how quickly a membership plan can lead to serious savings. If you do require treatment, you can enjoy a 10% discount for all your procedures with no maximum cap on benefits.

What about dental insurance?

Dental insurance and membership plans are similar in some ways and different in others. Insurance plans require monthly payments and include maximum benefit caps. If you plan on moving, dental insurance may be a good option since you won’t know who your next oral healthcare provider will be.

If you live in or around San Clemente, our affordable dental membership plan is the better choice. By handling all of our benefits in-house, we are able to provide greater savings than dental insurance plans can. Insurance providers have to pay for staff and overhead. We use our existing dental team. Our membership plan allows our patients to access preventative treatments at a reduced rate. By preventing future dental problems, our membership plan can save your family hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

How can I get the most out of my dental membership plan?

Once you sign up for our exclusive and affordable dental membership plan, one of our team members will schedule your twice-a-year cleanings as well as your exam. If we see any dental problems during your visit, we can address those issues as they arise. Minor cavities can usually be treated for a low fee. The key is early detection and prevention — two areas that our dental membership plan focuses on!

In between visits, we ask that our patients brush at least twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush. Flossing and therapeutic mouthwash are also great preventative measures. If you experience a toothache, let our office know. If your goal is to save money in 2020, it’s important to remember that early treatments are always more affordable than putting off dental problems.

Cosmetic Bonding vs Veneers: Which Option Is Right For Me?

By | cosmetic dentistry, Uncategorized

If you are embarrassed by cosmetic blemishes on your teeth, our San Clemente, CA office offers multiple cosmetic treatment options that can restore your smile. Invisalign clear aligners can address misaligned teeth while our teeth whitening treatments can brighten your smile by several shades. If you are dissatisfied with the size or shape of your teeth, we offer two effective treatments: cosmetic bonding and veneers.

The first step toward a more attractive smile involves scheduling a cosmetic consultation. During the initial visit, one of our doctors will discuss your cosmetic goals and examine your teeth and gums. If you are interested in the drastic results that cosmetic bonding or veneers can deliver, we offer this overview.

Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin to address minor defects like chips and small gaps between teeth. The resin can be shade-matched to match your smile. Bonding also matches the natural reflective properties of enamel. Bonding can address teeth that are broken, chipped, cracked, stained, or gapped.

Cosmetic bonding offers many benefits. The procedure is non-invasive and does not require the removal of natural tooth structure. In fact, cosmetic bonding is entirely reversible. Bonding is also highly affordable. Finally, bonding can be placed during a convenient visit of less than one hour.

The cosmetic bonding procedure is straightforward. There is no need for anesthesia or sedation. First, your tooth will need to be prepared. This involves cleaning the surface of your tooth and using a special etching compound to ensure that the bonding material obtains a strong bond. Then, one of our doctors will shade-match the resin to match your natural tooth color.

Once the bonding is matched, one of our doctors will artfully sculpt the material to restore or enhance the surface of your tooth. Any minor corrections can be made once the resin hardens. Sometimes, the material is polished to all match the shine of nearby enamel. There is no recovery time associated with this cosmetic treatment and side effects are rare.

If you are looking to dazzle friends with a Hollywood smile, veneers may be the right treatment option for you. Veneers are ultra-thin shells that are bonded to the front of anterior teeth. Veneers can be made from various materials, depending on your goals and budget. Both porcelain and ceramics can match the color and luster of natural teeth.

Veneers can fix teeth that are:

  • Discolored
  • Worn down
  • Chipped
  • Broken
  • Misaligned
  • Uneven
  • Irregularly shaped
  • Gaped

Veneers require two visits to our San Clemente dental practice. During your initial visit, small amounts of enamel will be removed to create room for the veneer to rest snugly against your teeth. This procedure is performed using local anesthesia so you are comfortable. A mold or digital impression of your teeth will be made, and you will be fitted with temporary veneers while your new attachment is manufactured at a trusted laboratory.

On your second and final visit, one of our doctors will ensure that your veneers are a perfect fit before placing them with a strong bonding agent that can hold the veneers for well over 10 years. Veneers do not require a recovery period, but some patients experience temporary side effects like tooth sensitivity.

Which Option Is Right for Me?

Veneers offer drastic results while cosmetic bonding is typically reserved for addressing minor cosmetic blemishes. If you are looking for an affordable treatment to address small chips or patches of discoloration, one of our doctors may recommend cosmetic bonding. If you are seeking a photo-ready smile that will turn heads, you may be a better candidate for porcelain veneers.

During your cosmetic consultation at our San Clemente dental practice, one of our doctors will be glad to discuss both treatment options in detail. To schedule your cosmetic consultation, please contact our San Clemente dental office online or by calling (949) 388-0780.
