Discoloration of enamel is a natural part of the aging process. To help our patients reclaim their youthful smiles, our office offers in-office and take-home whitening kits. Unlike store-bought kits, the whitening agents used in our products contain high concentrations of bleaching agents that can whiten teeth by several shades. The cosmetic treatment is safe and non-invasive. The results can last for years, and undergoing the treatment is relatively quick and convenient.
How does Teeth Whitening work?
Teeth whitening uses a whitening agent (typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) that lifts stains from the outer layer of your teeth. The gels can be administered at our office through a treatment that usually takes around one hour. If you prefer to handle your treatments at home, we offer take-home treatments.
Store-bought kits usually contain bleaching agent concentrations of two to three percent. Our advanced products contain anywhere from 20 to 40 percent bleaching agents. This is one reason why over-the-counter products simply cannot match the drastic results that our office can deliver.
Are you a candidate?
Patients who are dissatisfied with the color and luster of their teeth are good candidates for teeth whitening. The cosmetic treatment can be combined with other procedures to deliver even more drastic results. One of our doctors will establish your candidacy during your cosmetic consultation.
Teeth whitening works best when patients have extrinsic stains that have resulted from diet, poor oral hygiene, or other factors. If your discoloration lies deep within or beneath the enamel (intrinsic staining), you may be a better candidate for an alternative treatment like dental bonding or porcelain veneers.
Patients who have sensitive teeth can still undergo teeth whitening treatments in most cases. Simply notify one of our doctors about your sensitivity issue. A special toothpaste that temporarily lowers teeth sensitivity may be prescribed.
In-office treatments are conducted under the careful watch of a member of our dental team. First, steps will be taken to protect your gums from the bleaching gel. Once a protective barrier has been placed, the whitening agent will be applied across the front of your teeth. A custom mouthguard and special blue light may or may not be used, depending on the type of whitening product being used. Most treatments require one hour to complete. When your treatment is complete, the protective barrier will be removed, and any remaining bleaching gel will be removed.
If you opt to undergo whitening treatments at home, you will be given a custom mouthguard, syringes of whitening agents, and detailed instructions. Patients should take care to not allow the whitening agent to touch their gums tissue. Doing so could result in an unpleasant burning sensation and damage to your soft tissue. Each product will advise that the gel is left in your mouthguard for varying periods of time. At-home treatments generally take longer, but the options allow you to whiten your teeth at a time that is convenient for you.
Both treatment options may leave your teeth feeling sensitive for a day or two following treatment. It is generally advisable to avoid hot or cold food and drinks until your sensitivity subsides.
