Teeth whitening products use a whitening agent (typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) that lifts stains from teeth. Our whitening gels can be administered at our office through a treatment that usually takes around one hour.
If you prefer to handle your treatments at home, we offer take-home treatments. This process involves custom-made bleaching trays that patients typically wear for 30 minutes each day over a couple of weeks.
Can’t I just buy something at the store to whiten my teeth?
If you do an internet search, you will likely come across several natural and holistic ways to get whiter teeth. For instance, one common theory involves “oil pulling” with coconut oil. However, the American Dental Association (ADA) reports that this is “ineffective at best.”
Another common alternative is baking soda. While this can help eliminate mild surface stains through its abrasive properties, it can also damage your tooth enamel.
Whitening toothpastes are also quite common, but they also use abrasives. Theses abrasives remove surface stains, but they can also damage tooth enamel.
Store-bought home teeth whiteners usually contain bleaching agent concentrations of two to three percent. Our advanced products, however, contain anywhere from 20 to 40 percent. This is one reason why store-bought products simply cannot match the drastic results that our office can deliver.
Moreover, the strips and trays bought at the store or online are generic “one size fits all.” At Ocean View Dental Care, we offer custom-made bleaching trays that fit your teeth perfectly.
