General Dentistry

At Ocean View Dental Care, general family dentistry services are the foundation of our practice. When you invest a minimal amount of time and energy in routine preventive care, your smile will reap the benefits for a lifetime.

We offer the following family dentistry services to protect your smile from oral diseases and other issues.

Routine Preventive Care

At a minimum, patients should have routine preventive dental care every six months. This includes a thorough dental examination and professional teeth cleaning. In addition, you should have dental x-rays performed annually. This is true for both pediatric patients and their parents.

In some cases, patients may need to see the dentist more often. For instance, patients with periodontal (gum) disease may be placed on periodontal prevention. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, you may need to visit the dentist every three or four months.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

Having your teeth routinely cleaned by a dental hygienist is an important supplement to your home oral hygiene routine. Even if you are diligent about brushing and flossing as directed by your dentist, plaque and tartar may accumulate on some of the hard-to-reach surfaces of your teeth.

By the time tartar develops, you won’t be able to remove it by brushing and flossing alone. A dental hygienist can use specialized instruments to dislodge calculus. He or she can reach all areas of your mouth for a more thorough cleaning.

Additionally, if you have any questions about your oral hygiene technique, you can ask the hygienist or dentist at this appointment.

Dental Examination

The exams that take place at these check-ups allow your dentist to monitor your teeth and gums at regular intervals. This increases the chances that an arising problem, such as decay or gum disease, will be detected early. When issues are detected early, treatment options are much less expensive and invasive. If ignored, the problem can progress to a more serious issue that requires more aggressive treatment.

In addition, your dentist should screen you for oral cancer. An early diagnosis increases your chances of survival.

Optional Treatments

Your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments as part of your preventive care. This helps to remineralize and strengthen teeth, offering some additional protection against decay.
Dental sealants may also be recommended. Sealants are thin, plastic coatings that form a protective shield to help prevent tooth decay. The dentist will paint the protective barrier onto the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars where it will quickly bond into the grooves of the teeth. This is important. While proper brushing and flossing can remove plaque and food particles, the oral hygiene habits can’t always get into the nooks and crannies of molars and premolars.

If you grind or clench your teeth, also known as bruxism, you may need help with protecting your teeth. We can create a customized oral device for you to keep you from damaging your teeth as you sleep.

Did you know that dental injuries are the most common sports-related facial injury? For our athletes, we can create a customized mouthguard to keep them protected while they play or compete. Athletic mouthguards are flexible, thin pieces of plastic placed over the teeth. When properly fitting, the devices protect the teeth and jaw and minimize the chance of injury.
