Checkups and Cleanings

At Ocean View Dental Care, we believe that preventative treatments like dental cleanings are a great way to stay ahead of tooth decay and gum disease. By visiting our office twice a year (or as recommended by one of our dentists) you maintain optimal oral health while lowering your risk for dental problems that can require costly and invasive treatments.

What are Checkups and Cleanings?

Dental cleanings and exams fall under general dentistry. The purpose of these regular visits is to keep an accurate account of your oral health and to treat dental problems early. There are two basic parts to these visits: an exam and dental cleaning.

Exams

Dental exams can be completed before or after your cleaning at our dental practice. One of our doctors will ask if you have had any oral discomfort or symptoms that may be related to dental problems. A visual inspection of your mouth with a gloved hand is one way that our doctors can identify and diagnose potential issues like bruxism, tooth decay, or malocclusion. Our office uses advanced digital x-rays that can look deep into your teeth, jaws, and sinuses for signs of potential dental issues.

If one of our doctors sees a minor dental problem, it can be treated during that appointment or at a later date. Serious issues like advanced periodontitis will require a separate visit to treat the advanced infection with a deep cleaning. If you have questions about your oral health, these regular visits are a great time to learn expert tips from our dental team.

Routine Cleanings

Twice-a-year dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup as a means of preventing gum disease and tooth decay. Tartar (calcified plaque) cannot be removed at home. Only a trained oral hygienist has the tools and expertise to remove the hardened buildup. Our patients can benefit from our advanced ultrasonic scaling system called the Cavitron. The device removes tartar without aggravating the surrounding gum tissue. Our patients report that the device delivers a more comfortable cleaning experience compared to traditional cleanings conducted with handheld metal tools.

Benefits of Routine Cleanings and Exams

We highly recommend that our patients visit our office twice a year for cleanings and exams. There are many benefits, both in regard to oral health and cost-savings. Two of the most common dental problems in this country (gum disease and tooth decay) can be treated or prevented simply by undergoing regular dental cleanings and by maintaining good oral hygiene habits at home. During your exam, members of our dental team will provide expert advice on how to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Periodontitis remains the leading cause of tooth loss in this country, according to the National Institutes of Health.

To diagnose dental problems in their early stages, our office offers advanced technology, including digital imaging. Routine cleanings and exams can prevent:

  • Advanced gum disease
  • Root canal infections
  • Advanced tooth wear
  • TMJ disorder
  • Tooth loss
  • Gum tissue recession
