Children's Dentistry

Finding the right dentist for your child is an important decision. Not all dentists provide dental services for children. At Ocean View Dental Care, we are proud to focus on family dentistry. As part of our mission to serve the families of San Clemente, we offer comprehensive treatment options for children of all ages. If you were wondering what treatment options are available for children and teenagers, we offer this overview.

Children’s Dentistry Overview

A lot can happen to a child’s teeth and gums as they grow through adolescence. Toddlers, children, and teenagers face unique dental situations. Having a qualified dentist to guide your child through the developmental years can lay the groundwork for a lifetime of optimal oral health. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), children should see a dentist by the age of 1 or within six months of the emergence of their first tooth.

Cleanings and Exams

Just like adults, children of all ages require regular cleanings and exams. One of our doctors will determine the frequency of these visits, based on the unique needs and age of your child. Children are especially prone to developing cavities. Often, this is due to poor oral hygiene habits.

During your family’s visit to our dental practice, one of our doctors or a member of our dental team will demonstrate proper brushing techniques to your child. If a cavity is found, our office can treat the decay before restoring structure to your child’s tooth using tooth-colored fillings. At all times, our team members will be gentle and mindful of your child’s comfort.

During your child’s exam, one of our doctors will look for signs of developmental issues. If your child has significant jaw or teeth development issues, one of our doctors can coordinate treatments with a local orthodontist or pediatric dentist. Early intervention can reduce your child’s risk of developing jaw alignment issues.

Your child’s cleanings will be completed by a dental hygienist who will gently remove tartar and plaque along your child’s teeth. This procedure can prevent gum disease and tooth decay. One of our doctors may recommend preventative treatments as well. The topical application of fluoride can reduce your child’s chances of developing tooth decay by hardening the enamel of their teeth. Our doctors will be careful to not over administer fluoride.

Our office also offers a special plastic sealant that can greatly reduce your child’s risk of developing cavities. The sealants coat the deep crevices and grooves of the molars, where tooth decay is most likely to occur.

We are proud to offer orthodontic treatments through Invisalign. The clear aligners gently nudge adult teeth into better alignment through micro-movements. Invisalign even offers a series just for teenagers. Invisalign Teen alerts parents when the trays are not being worn for 20-22 hours per day as required. There are many benefits to undergoing orthodontic treatments before the age of 18. Our doctors can account for jaw growth to optimize orthodontic results.

Deep cleanings can also deliver cosmetic benefits. Gum disease causes gum tissue to swell and occasionally bleed. Healthy gums allow for a more cosmetically pleasing gum line.
